| "The Claimjumper" - Apt. 17 | |
| Flashback: Claim Jumper Cabin was named after the mining heritage of Judge Deane. Joshua W Deane was one of the first few people to travel from Leadville to establish the town of Aspen. The first winter was harsh, and fear of Ute Indians pushed settlers to live at the town of Highland, located at the base of Conundrum Creek. Spring brought them downvalley to the flat area of Aspen where J.W. Deane helped lay out the townsite, and due to his knowlege of law, became the town's self-appointed judge. He staked his claim in what is now the base of Aspen mountain, running the "red light district." Today in front of the Grand Aspen Hotel, a sign can be seen disgnating "Dean Street" (although they spelled it wrong!). During the Great Depression, Had Deane (Judge Deane's grandson), lost the land for $53 worth of back taxes. That is the spot where the multi-million dollar Ritz Carlton is now built. East of town towards Independence Pass is Weller campground. This area was the site of the Deane mining cabins, a small settlement of miners. Rumors still abound about a small mother lode gold mine somewhere in the hills of surrounding Aspen. Judge Deane unfortunately took the knowlege of its whereabouts to the grave, leaving behind a great secret. Claimjumper sports a piece of mining heritage: an old iron mining carts adorns the yard by the front door. It has at its heard a second heritage: it served as housing for the famed 10th Mountain Division soldiers. | |
